Third generation potter to debut work in Melville open studios for the first time

More than 100 artists are set to descend across Perth’s southern suburbs this weekend as they invite the public to take a peek inside their studios.

Melville Open Art Studios will be held May 4 and 5 from 10am to 4pm.

For third generation potter Finn Happ, this year will the first time he opens his doors to the public in Melville.

“It’s just such a fantastic opportunity for people to be exposed to art,” he said.

“Of course it’s beneficial for the artists to have another opportunity to make a little bit of income (and) sell their work.

“I feel like it’s also an opportunity for people to be inspired ... and maybe try this on some scale.”

The 25-year-old originally hails from Dunsborough and made to the move to the city to pursue his career.

Happ currently practises as a pottery technician with South of the River Potters’ Club and is set to lead classes in the upcoming term.

While the third generation of potters in his family, Happ said he didn’t pick up the practice until after returning from a gap year following high school.

“Basically growing up, it was just dad’s job being a potter,” he said.

“Then all of a sudden, it’s like, ah, this is what it’s all about.

“My dad started teaching me everything he knows.”

Artists’ own homes will be on display during the event, as well as hubs across Atwell House, Goolugatup Heathcote, Studio Door and Feld & Co.

Curator Jennifer Gaye said the weekend was an opportunity for artists to share their usually private worlds.

“If you’ve ever wondered about the process of creation or wanted to ask an artist about their inspiration, this is your opportunity,” she said.

City of Melville mayor Katy Mair said the city was excited to showcase a “talented community of creatives” across the district.

Melville Open Art Studios will be held May 4 and 5 from 10am to 4pm.
