SUNDAY, February 5 is World Nutella Day.
Sure, it may lack the same emotive punch as World Environment Day – but to us this is serious business.
It was in 1964 when the first jar of Nutella left the factory in Piedmont Italy, and since then it’s become a global phenomenon.

Now, to us Nutella is symptomatic of one of society’s great conundrums: it tastes good, but it’s pushing species to the brink of extinction.
One of the main ingredients is palm oil. Not a bad thing in itself, but the getting of it is creating large plantations that are destroying habitats – bad news if you’re a Sumatran rhino, an orangutan, tiger or elephant.
The problem is that brown stuff is delicious.
So, like any piece of balanced reporting we’ll give you the facts, then let you decide what to do with them.
These are some of our favourite dishes in Perth that use Nutella:
The Brooklyn Lounge, Claremont
The s’mores is really something: a choc-chip cookie sandwich with Nutella and marshmallow. Picture: Instagram.
Woodfire Italian Restaurant, Ellenbrook
Woodfire’s torta di Nutella is just the trick if you’re looking for an afternoon sugar fix with your coffee. Rich, dense and moist, the delicious hazelnut flavours will leave you wanting another piece.
Lena Lu, Perth
Nutella Doughnut. No real explanation needed here. The real challenge with these is stopping.
Ostro Eatery, Rockingham
If banana and Nutella isn’t a match made in heaven, we don’t know what is. And this combo comes in a shake! Photographic proof is scarce so you’ll just have to pop down and try one for yourself.
Coffee Club, Whitford City
Technically not just at Westfield Whitford City, but cafe chain Coffee Club has jumped on board with a deliciously simple Nutella pancake option – served with mixed berries and whipped cream!
Dolce e Salato, South Fremantle/Cockburn/Morley
These guys are not just about pizza, and they’re not just about delicious Italian pastries. They’re also about the Nocciolato – a sponge cake made with nutella, fresh cream, coffee syrup and dark chocolate flakes.
Eccolo Italian Restaurant, Hillarys
Nutella Pizza. Say no more. And fresh out of a wood-fired over to boot.
Sapore Espresso Bar, Cloverdale
Nutella. Hot. Chocolate. LOOK AT IT!
Dawn Patrol Mobile Cafe, Mandurah
Nutella Doughnuts to die for – and they’re right near the foreshore! Picture: Instagram.
Babooshka, Northbridge
These guys know how to make a supershake – and the Nutella and tiny teddy offering they have on the menu is perfection. Picture: Instagram.
Le Petit Crepe, Kalamunda Night Markets
This Hills-based mobile creperie’s Nutella and strawberries crepe is incredible – but the word on the street is that there’s a new flavour available: Mars Bar. Made with home made salted caramel and Nutella. Check out the Facebook page for locations..
