City of Canning hopes to minimise disposable coffee cups going to landfill with Responsible Cafes Program

Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

THROUGH the adoption of the Responsible Cafes Program, the City of Canning hopes to minimise the number of disposable cups making their way to landfill each year.

The program, so far adopted by Canning River Eco Cafe and Six Willows Cafe incentivises customers by offering a discount to those with reusable takeaway cups.

One billion takeaway cups and lids are disposed of in Australia each year and 90 per cent of the disposed cups in Canning make their way to landfill as they are plastic lined and not recyclable.

The City is offering a free batch of Switch Your Thinking Keep Cups to all cafes who sign up to the program to give to loyal customers.

Additional promotional material is also available for participating cafes.

Mayor Paul Ng said the City was proud to be part of the movement and was encouraging local cafes to offer a discount to customers with reusable takeaway cups.

“We are asking our community and their visitors to switch their thinking and use reusable coffee cups at cafes in Canning to reduce the amount of plastic waste from disposable coffee cups,” he said.
