Great response in southeast metropolitan area to Red Cross call for blood after Christmas

Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

RESIDENTS throughout the southeast metropolitan area came in droves to donate blood at the Cannington Red Cross Blood Donor centre during the critical period of December 26 to January 2.

About 300 people donated blood at the centre and more than 10 per cent were first-time donors.

WA blood supplies are currently considered as fine, but there are concerns about blood stocks during the Australia Day public holiday.

Blood Service spokeswoman Jessica Willett said there were spots available for prospective donors to book in.

“Cannington will be open for blood donations on (Australia Day), but currently we have only seven people booked in to donate,” she said.

“As every donation helps save three lives, those 300 donations helped 900 people during the festive season.”
