Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

THIS Australia Day will mark an important milestone for Bentley’s Erika Jocson.

The 25-year-old registered nurse moved to Perth as part of a study abroad program, but on Thursday she will become an Australian.

Ms Jocson studied nursing education for three years in her home town of Manila in the Philippines before taking the opportunity to study a year in Perth at ECU.

Not long after her move, Ms Jocson knew that Perth was a place she wanted to make her home.

“The people are lovely; I love the culture and the environment. I’ve made many friends here and on top of that I love my job,” she said.

Now working at SwanCare, Ms Jocson said the cherry on top of a wonderful life would be becoming an Australian citizen on Australia Day.

“It’s really a privilege to be an Australian citizen and I’m absolutely thrilled,” Ms Jocson said.

“I’m very excited about celebrating Australia Day as a citizen, and will be spending the day having a traditional Aussie barbecue with my friends and partner, as well as catching the fireworks in the evening.”
