Tourism WA keen for West Aussie feel for new Qantas Dreamliner plane

UPDATE 1/6/17:  Western Australia is one step closer to being represented in Qantas’s new Dreamliner fleet, with ‘Quokka’ making the shortlist of 20 potential names.

Qantas launched a campaign on May 15 asking Australians to suggest names that reflected the true spirit of Australia for the airline’s fleet of eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

Tourism WA wanted Western Australians to get behind a push to name one of the planes the ‘Qantas Quokka’.

TOURISM WA wants Western Australians to help convince Qantas to give one of their eight new Boeing 787 Dreamliners a distinctly Western Australian flavour.

The competition, which runs for another two days, asked people to nominate their names for the new planes.

Qantas have asked people to submit their names for the new planes to the competition page on their website.

Tourism WA wants Western Australians to submit the name ‘Qantas Quokka’.

With tickets for the new non-stop London-Perth route going on sale recently, Tourism WA CEO Gwyn Dolphin said the world’s happiest animal, the quokka, was the ideal choice to represent the route.

“The daily service, operated by Qantas’ new Dreamliner, will be the first to directly link Australia with Europe when it begins on March 24 next year, so it makes sense for the name of the aircraft to reflect that route,” Mr Dolphin said.

“The two ‘Qs’ sound great together and what could be better than pairing the flying kangaroo with another iconic marsupial?”
