Cannington Greyhounds: rain forces delay of meet to determine Nationals field

Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

THE preparation of Western Australia’s greyhounds for the upcoming Nationals in Adelaide was disrupted following the cancellation of the race meeting at Cannington last Saturday.

The meeting was supposed to determine the heats of the WA Sprint (520m) and WA Distance (715m) Championships but only two sprint heats were held before racing was called off.

The Stewards, under the advice of the vet, made the decision due to excessive kick back off the racing surface.

Perth Cup Consolation winner finalist Cobra Clutch and talented youngster Who’s Got Snoop won the opening two sprint heats before the meeting was abandoned.

The remainder of the heats were conducted at Mandurah on Monday night over the 490m journey for the sprint and the 647m for the distance.

Both finals will now also been held at Mandurah this Saturday night with the winners of each race booking their ticket to the SA Nationals later this month.

In the meantime, Cannington will be out of action for the next couple of weeks while remedial work is conducted on the track.
