SBL: imports inspire Willetton Tigers to another win

James O'DonohueCanning Gazette

Willetton, playing without starting point guard Kyle Armour, started slowly and struggled to find their usual cohesion in the first half, and the Tigers found themselves down by four points at the major interval.

However, they found their rhythm in the second half to stay in the contest, with Turner and Bowie hitting crucial shots in the decisive moments of the final quarter help them close out their 19th win of the season.

Turner, who suffered a bad knock to his hip last weekend, managed to get through the game unscathed, finishing with a game-high 34 points and 14 rebounds, while Bowie shot a brilliant 12-of-16 from the field to add 32 points. Damien Scott chipped in with 13.

For the Slammers, imports Brian Voelkel and Tre Nicholls scored 25 and 20 points respectively, while three other Slammers players hit double-figure scoring, but with players in foul-trouble, they lacked the defenders to stop Turner and Bowie in the closing minutes with the game up for grabs.

Despite the teams shooting struggles in the first half, Tigers coach Stephen Black was pleased with his teams resolve to hang in there and pull out another victory on the road.

“I was just so proud that the guys just hung in there” said Black. “I think sometimes when some of those shots don’t fall, you second guess yourself and you think you’re going to force something else. But to their credit, they didn’t. They just said no, I’m gonna get us a good look, and if we miss it, we miss it.. and we always try to look at it that way.

“And I thought in the second half we played really smart offensive Basketball. I’d like us to talk a little more on defence, but we really made them make tough plays.” he said.

Black was also very impressed his team were able to come into a hostile environment missing two key players in Armour and key-rotation player Hayden Noordhoek and still find a way to win.
