Soccer: Armadale succumbs to another heavy defeat in NPLWA

Ben SmithComment News

ARMADALE SC crashed to a 4-1 defeat to title contenders Bayswater City at Bayswater Stadium in the NPLWA.

Gustavo Giron Marulanda grabbed a brace to go with strikes from Andrija Jukic and Bor Bor Sam as Armadale slipped to a heavy defeat for the second week running.

Armadale coach John O’Reilly said an inability to take chances and a lack of depth were to blame for the defeat.

“In the last few weeks I think we have been creating a lot of chances, but the difference between being at the top of the ladder and the bottom comes down to working those opportunities into actual goals,” he said.

“We had a really good run of defensive performances at the start of the year, but unfortunately now we have been hit with some end-of-the-season blues with injuries and suspensions.”

Bayswater took the lead in the fourth minute when goalkeeper Michael Craggs made a poor clearance while outside of his box and the ball fell to Jukic, who took a touch before firing home from long range.

The home side doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Marulanda turned home a low cross.

Armadale halved the deficit early in the second half when James Atkins squared the ball to Jordan Pavett, whose first-time shot found the bottom corner.

Armadale’s hopes of a comeback were short-lived, however, as Bayswater responded two minutes later through Maralunda, who converted the rebound after Craggs saved Luka Ninkovic’s shot.

Bayswater secured the three points when Sam dribbled into the box from the wing before unleashing a powerful effort beyond the keeper.
