Greyhounds: Get A Beer breaks through while Jimmy soars high

James BroadhurstMandurah Times

It was cheers all round in Shayne Williams’ kennels after ex-Victorian chaser Get A Beer broke through for his first victory in WA at Mandurah last Friday night.

Get A Beer joined Williams’ team in early February and despite knocking on the door with some handy runs, including some noteworthy runner-up efforts during his heat and final of the Good Friday Cup, the dog had been winless in the West.

The drought-breaking triumph came in the 50 years of Racing Cristina McCraig Grade 2/3 over 400m.

Get A Beer launched well from box eight to land on the shoulder of the leading Mashle Wave as they charged down the back straight.

At the turn, Get A Beer slipped to the front along the rail and then had enough left in the tank to hold out the fast-finishing Lil Bit Twisted by half a length in 22.38.

In other racing, electrifying young chaser Jimmy’s Jet continued the brilliant start to his career with another eye-catching victory over the 400m journey.

The Paul Start-trained speedster collected his third win from as many starts when he romped home by a big margin in the Zack Monelli at Stud Novice (400m).

After a moderate start, Jimmy’s Jet quickly clicked into gear and surged away to leave his rivals in dust.

The exciting fawn extended his advantage throughout the race before going on to score by more than nine lengths in 22.02.

Jimmy’s Jet made an immediate impact on debut on March 19 when he clocked a sizzling 21.93, just short of the track record of 21.90.

All his wins have been by eight lengths or more.
