THE Donald becoming President of the US caught many by surprise – including Chinese carmaker GAC Motor.
It is planning to enter the United States market with its flagship brand, Trumpchi, but now it’s having second thoughts about the name and might well change it before its planned entry date in 2019.
Trumpchi, in which the ‘p’ is silent, was meant to sound like its Chinese name Chuanqi, a play on the word ‘legendary’ and means good fortune, but it drew some smiles at the Detroit auto show in January.
“We saw people were laughing at this,” GAC Motor design director Zhang Fan said.
“They took pictures and put it on Facebook.
“When we read that feedback, we realised it might not be a very positive promotion for the brand.”
GAC says any similarity between the brand name and The Donald’s was unintentional.
“It is a complete coincidence. We didn’t even have the slightest idea he would be president,” GAC Group president Feng Xingya said.
