Chance viewing of Liv Apartments display brings Felicity Dillon back to Fremantle

Tanya MacNaughtonEastern Reporter

LIFE has taken Felicity Dillon on quite a journey, bringing her back to the place she feels most at home – Fremantle.

The 65-year-old grew up in Canberra before her mum’s hometown of Perth called to her during her late 30s and she moved to Fremantle.

A chance meeting at a dinner party led to a second marriage to army bandsman Corporal John Peterson, whose “cheeky” personality caught her eye.

“We had 10 fantabulous years together before he died from a brain tumour,” Dillon said.

“After he passed away (15 years ago) I went to Notre Dame University and became a lawyer at the tender age of 55.

“I got a graduate lawyer job in Sydney and spent 10 years in the Sydney corporate legal world and then came back to Fremantle last year. I was staying with friends and decided I wanted to move back for good.”

Fate stepped in just as Dillon was due to return to Sydney as she walked along Queen Victoria Street and saw the Liv Apartments display, Defence Housing Australia’s contemporary new apartment development.

Dillon said she went in without having looked anywhere else, loved it and the stability that came with Defence Housing, and put a deposit down the next day.

“At first I was concerned it was nostalgia for my old life but I came back last year having just retired, or semi-retired really, and not knowing what I was going to do,” she said.

“You don’t need a defence force background to buy and it had absolutely nothing to do with me being a defence force wife. It’s just an absolute coincidence but it did give me a level of comfort.”

Dillon is house-sitting until her one-bedroom apartment is finished next July, a moment she is anticipating with great excitement.

“I keep dreaming of it, just being in Freo, being in my own space and having people around and feeling safe,” she said.

“I’ll be close to the swimming pool and Fremantle Arts Centre to do some art classes.”
