FOUR WA teams finished in the top 10 of the under-15s national lacrosse tournament held at the Bayswater Lacrosse Club last week.

Thousands of people flocked to Halliday Park Reserve in Bayswater to watch the best lacrosse juniors in action.

The WA boys teams finished second and fourth behind Victorian winners Western Metro, while the girls teams finished third and seventh behind New Zealand’s Waikato.

WA’s teams consisted of players from Bayswater, Wembley, Subiaco, Wanneroo-Joondalup, Phoenix and East Fremantle lacrosse clubs.

Bayswater Lacrosse Club president and tournament director Jesse Bowland said the club had eight boys and four girls who represented WA.

“Lacrosse is a minority sport, but it’s definitely gaining in popularity in Perth and this tournament encourages people to get involved in it,” he said.

“It was really good just for the community; there were a lot of non-lacrosse people that came down.”

Bowland said the help of the City of Bayswater and volunteers was important in making sure the grounds and the club was ready in time.

The City contributed $6000 to install lacrosse nets at the reserve and provided $5000 towards re-tiling the changing rooms.

Bayswater Lacrosse Club will host the Australian men’s team for a training and game day on October 21.
