City of Fremantle to trial Baugruppen housing model

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

A EUROPEAN model for affordable housing will be trialled in Fremantle.

Believed to be a unique concept in WA, the City of Fremantle has agreed to trial the Baugruppen housing model, which gives community members the freedom to design their own place to live without the need for developers.

Fremantle councillor Rachel Pemberton said the model, which was popular in large cities like Berlin, resulted in lower housing development costs for owners, unique designs and a strong sense of community.

“This cooperative housing project allows people to have an input into the design of not only their own living spaces but also the design of the whole building, including communal areas,” she said.
