Janet’s New Skills: first-time filmmaker takes out Life in Pictures gong

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

RUTH Kendall had never picked up a video camera before this year.

Despite this, the East Fremantle resident’s natural videography and directorial skills have shone through in the recent Life in Pictures short film competition, taking out the Over 60s category with her movie Janet’s New Skills.

Kendall said Janet’s New Skills follows a woman on a mission to learn something new and become more independent, a theme that she experienced herself while making the short film.

“Initially I felt totally overwhelmed and daunted by doing something I’ve never previously done, plus I didn’t have decent equipment to make the videos,” she said.

“However I kept telling myself to have a go and as I’ve now entered my 60s I wanted to demonstrate to everyone ‘ageing’ to keep taking on challenges and learn new skills.

“The win was a huge surprise especially when I realised I was competing against professional production companies who had entered videos into the competition.

“In contrast I did everything on my own; I directed, filmed, produced, wrote the script, and did the editing, and this win gave me a huge boost in confidence.”

The Life in Pictures competition invites WA residents to submit a short film that promotes positive attitudes about ageing.
