Munster radio presenter recognised as top talent

Bryce LuffFremantle Gazette

THE man behind a familiar voice beamed through thousands of Perth radios each work day has been rewarded for a big year.

Tyrone Thwaites, hit92.9 mornings announcer, was recently named among Radio Today’s top new talent to watch in 2017.

Also on the list of the country’s 20 most exciting radio voices was new Triple J breakfast hosts Ben and Liam, former The Bachelor star Heather Maltman and Brisbane Bronco’s player Sam Thaiday.

“I wasn’t as excited as maybe I should have been given the incredible talent that has been on the list before,” Thwaites said.

“But I guess it’s mental validation that listeners and the bosses upstairs like what I’m doing.

“That feels good because ultimately radio is about making other people feel something.

“Knowing they connect with me for even five seconds means I’ve done my job.”

The nomination followed what had been a busy period for the 25-year-old Munster resident.

He jumped on board as MC at Fremantle Dockers and Perth Scorchers games, and got to fill in at a sister station in Sydney for two weeks late last year.

He said he was enjoying all his job had to offer.

“My approach is a little cliche. I don’t treat it like a job,” he said.

“It’s an opportunity to make Perth feel something every day.

“Radio can connect people to their city and a streaming service can’t do that.

“So that’s how I approach the studio every day; (I’m) looking to make Perth feel something … in the realest way possible.”
