St Pat’s Sleep Out Under the Stars to help homeless

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

Working with the homeless on a daily basis, the St Patrick’s Community Support Centre is encouraging locals to join in latest fundraiser by experiencing for themselves what it can be like to spend a night on the streets.

The inaugural St Pat’s Sleep Out Under the Stars raised $10,000 last year, a figure that chief executive Steve McDermott said they were hoping to match and even overtake this year.

“Last year was a great success both in terms of awareness-raising and raising valuable funds for our services,” he said.

“The Sleep Out is a great way to start a conversation with your friends and family around homelessness.

“Last May, we had a lot of families sleeping over together and it was really wonderful to see those discussions starting to happen.”

The event will be run with help from the University of Notre Dame at the university’s Prindiville Hall and Malloy Courtyard.

It will include musical acts, children’s entertainment and a meal of bread and soup.

The St Pat’s Sleep Out Under the Stars will run from 5.30pm on May 6.
