Ali Schwagmeyer scored 27 points in 25 minutes of court time to help Lakdeside consolidate third position on the SBL table with an 88-72 win over Kalamunda at Ray Owen Sports Centre on Friday.

Schwagmeyer added a game-high 13 rebounds and four assists to her impressive all-round performance that guided the Lightning to its 15th win from 20 starts.

Sydnee Fipps was also important with 26 points shooting at 50 per cent from the field.

With two home and away rounds to go, Cockburn looks vulnerable in seventh place after being beaten 73-62 by Joondalup at Wally Hagan Stadium on Friday.

Kersten Mitchell and Brianna Moyes drained 22 points each for the hosts but the Wolves were far too strong with Klara Wischer leading the way with 24 points.

In the men’s division, Lakeside threw its hat back in the finals mix with two wins.

Corey Shervill scored 34 points, James Padgett 31 and Devon Atkinson 25 as Lakeside completed a 114-100 win over Kalamunda on Friday.

The Lightning backed up on Saturday with a 91-85 win over Goldfields Giants at Lakeside Recreation Centre.

Padgett scored another 29 points in the win.

Seventh-placed Cockburn found things a little tougher, going down to Joondalup 71-64 at home on Friday.

WAFL

East Fremantle is just percentage from second-last position on the WAFL table after a 16-point win over Perth on Saturday.

It was a great Saturday for Fremantle’s top-tier state football sides, with South Fremantle consolidating second position with a 40-point victory over Swan Districts.

The Sharks went goalless in the last term but were good enough to hold off Perth for a second time at East Fremantle Oval this season, 11.7 (73) to 8.9 (57).

Matthew Watson kicked a season-high four goals to lead the Sharks to the win, with Sean Henson tallying 32 disposals.

For Perth, Clint Jones recorded 36 disposals and Cody Ninyette kicked two goals.

Across town, the Bulldogs recorded win number 11 for the season after overcoming a slow start against the Swans at Fremantle Oval, 15.13 (103) to 9.9 (63).

Bulldogs forward Corey Dell’Olio kicked three goals and Steven Edwards had 24 disposals.

For the visitors, Taryce Stewart kicked three majors and Tony Notte notched up a team-high 23 disposals.

HOCKEY

A 1-0 win over third-placed Vic Park has kept the Fremantle Hockey Club’s premier 1 men’s chances of playing finals alive.

Vic Park had dropped just two games leading up to Saturday’s game and this game also looked like going down to the wire until Fremantle’s Matthew Butturini found the back of the net in the 67th minute.

With just six games to go, the win has helped Fremantle jump up into fifth spot, now just three points behind Vic Park who slipped to fourth.

Fremantle face another important game this Sunday against the Old Aquinians, who sit just one point below in sixth.

Fremantle’s Premier 1 women lost yet another game, this time going down to Vic Park 3-1.

Captain Jess Steele was the sole goal scorer for Fremantle in the 13th minute, putting the Magpies in front briefly, before a trio of goals from Vic Park sealed the win.

SOCCER

A last minute penalty has helped Cockburn City snare a draw from the jaws of defeat against Joondalup United on Saturday afternoon.

Joondalup hit the front through a penalty in the 34th minute and looked like running away with a win until the 93rd minute, when Cockburn’s Jesse Lazzaro found himself on the end of a sliding tackle that the referee deemed reckless, awarding the visitors a penalty.

Harry O’Brien was able to guide the ball past the keeper to save the game for Cockburn.

Cockburn coach Scott Miller said the penalty was justified.

“I thought we controlled the second half quite easily, they were quite strong in the first half,” he said.

“They will say it wasn’t a penalty, we’ll say that the first one wasn’t a penalty though.”
