FREMANTLE and Cockburn’s young upcoming hockey stars are studded throughout the HockeyWA state men and women’s under-18 teams.

Molly Hagen and Jo Snyman, both students at Seton Catholic College, were two of 22 selected for the women’s team, while Bibra Lake’s Brad Engelbrecht, Fremantle’s Harry Golding and James Collins, South Lake’s Justin Schonken and Fremantle Hockey Club’s Riley Faulds were all named in the 25-strong men’s team.

Both teams will be looking to emulate the success of last year, with the men finishing as champions while the women brought home the bronze.

Under-18 men’s coach Tom Wickham said the huge number of talented players in the state made the selection process a difficult one.

“The process was tough as the high standard meant it was very close across the board,” he said.

“The athletes selected all showed that they have what it takes to be able to fit into a team and do a job for the benefit of their team.

“The selection panels were looking for athletes that are willing to put others before themselves, put the team before themselves and use their individual strengths to support their team.

“We believe that this has played a huge part in the success of our under-18 programs in the past three years, a theme we want to continue to embed.”

The under-18 championships will be held in Tasmania from April 19 to 29.
