Young guns test mettle

The program has run since 1999 to promote baseball as a sport and try to raise its profile locally, with Major League baseballer Mathew Kennelly, from the Cincinnati Reds, and younger brother Joshua, who plays minor league for the same team, taking part in the program in the past.

South Fremantle Senior High School’s Michael Wrenn said the program involved Darling Range Sports College and Seaton High School from South Australia, but a Queensland school was unable to make the trip.

‘Specialist programs are so good for the self-esteem of the participants, plus they get extra exposure in the sport, achieve higher standards of excellence in skills and mix with other students at a higher level,’ he said.
