City of Vincent to rule on extended weekend hours for Babushka

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

CITY of Vincent councillors will tonight discuss an application to extend a local bar’s operating hours on weekends.

The application proposes Babushka on the first floor of the Leederville Hotel building be open until 3am on Friday and Saturday nights to bring it in line with other nightclubs in the area, some of which open until 5am.

Babushka currently opens until 1am on weekends.

Concerns were raised by nearby residents during the consultation period that the move could result in increased anti-social behaviour or noise, but the staff recommendation is that the application be passed.

Several conditions have been placed on the application.

An acoustic assessment of the venue concluded noise levels could comply with Environmental Protection Regulations if managed at the mixing desk.

A final decision on the application is expected to be made at a future council meeting.

The applicant stated in the submission that anti-social behaviour could be reduced by carrying out a staggered closing of each venue in the building, which also contains Bill’s Bar and Bites, The Garden and the Blue Flamingo.

If the application is passed, and complaints are lodged, hours of operation could be restricted to an “appropriate time”.
