Live at the Backlot – Up Close and Personal: West Perth venue to host intimate live music shows

Julian WrightEastern Reporter

A WEST Perth private cinema could be a hot new venue for local musicians to showcase their talents with a musical series being launched this month.

Live at The Backlot – Up Close and Personal will be a regular series of intimate acoustic performances presented by Around the Sound, with musical duo Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse kicking it off on Thursday, September 28.

Perth music industry stalwart Bob Gordon will host a Q and A session after the set.

The studio, which opened two years ago, traditionally hosts film screenings and private functions.

Williams and Ghouse, who have been playing together for five years and are finishing up their second album together, said they were “privileged” to be the first musical acts in the venue.

The pair said some of the new songs, which are sung in Nyungar language, would be part of the set.

“We started working on little gigs around Perth (and) at the time, Guy was saying ‘you should write songs in language’; that was 2012,” Gina said.

“We thought at the time we’d release an album, we’d press 500 and sell four and give away the rest to my family and people would forget about it after six months and we’d go back to our business.

“But it hasn’t happened that way, it’s been extraordinary.”

Mr Gordon said new music venues were important for the Perth scene.

“Any type of new forum is a good one,” he said.

“We have our tried and true pubs and venues, that often frankly could be busier when it comes to people listening to live performances, but any new way of doing is welcome.”

Backlot managing director Ian Hale said he was fan of Williams and Ghouse and thrilled to have them on board.

“It’s a huge honour to have them as the inaugural act, it’s like the planets lined up,” he said.
