Perth battered by heavy rain, more on the way

Staff WriterEastern Reporter

PERTH has been battered by heavy rainfall this morning, causing damage and flash flooding and at least one injury throughout the metro area.

And the bad news is there’s more on the way, with two cold fronts expected to lash the city this weekend.

The first  is expected to arrive on Thursday evening.

Wednesday morning saw plenty of precipitation, with 20mm falling in the metro area between 9am and 12.30pm.

The rain caused damage in some areas, with an awning covering businesses in Mt Hawthorn collapsing due to the downpour.

An elderly man reportedly suffered head injuries when he was struck by part of the awning, and he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Workmen stabilised the structure before removing it.

Bureau of Metereology spokesperson Glenn Cook said the hills had copped the worst of the deluge.

“Perth metro at Mt Lawley had exactly 20mm from 9am until 12.40pm,” he said.

“The airport had slightly more, 21.8mm and then up at Bickley in the Hills it was 25.8mm.”

“It looks like the bulk of it is really gone now.

“There may be an odd shower or two around the rest of the afternoon, but certainly nothing like we saw this morning.”
