NPL WA round 18: Cockburn and Armadale to square off in southern derby

Staff WriterEastern Reporter

COCKBURN City faces Armadale in the National Premier Leagues WA (NPL WA) round 18 southern derby tomorrow, with both sides coming off strong results against top teams last week.

In round 17, Cockburn held off then-league leaders Floreat Athena with a 1-1 draw, while Armadale fought third-placed Sorrento in a goalless draw.

Cockburn coach Scott Miller said his side, who last played Armadale in round 6 and won 3-2, will be looking to take the points again.

“Last week we saw good results for us and Armadale against the bigger name clubs, so the derby’s going to be a good game,” he said.

“The first time we met this season, we probably got the goals just at the right time and there wasn’t really much between the two teams, so this will be another tight contest.

“Armadale are a much-improved team from last season. The style of football is different and the results show that.

“The quality of players they’ve got in there is very good so it’ll be an interesting game.”

Armadale coach John O’Reilly said he was expecting another close match.

“Both teams will feel confident after getting a result against tough competition last week,” he said.

“Last time we met with Cockburn, we felt we could have got at least a point, if not the three points out of that game.

“We made a few mistakes that gifted Cockburn a few opportunities so hopefully we’ll tighten up on that area and be a bit more clinical  this weekend.”

In other round 18 action, Bayswater City hosts Sorrento at Frank Drago Reserve, the sides sitting fifth and third on the NPL WA ladder respectively.

League leaders Inglewood United travel to the far south where it will take on Mandurah City, while Floreat Athena heads north to meet ECU Joondalup at ECU Joondalup Football Stadium.

Perth SC faces Perth Glory at Ashfield Arena, while Joondalup United meets Balcatta at Percy Doyle Reserve and Subiaco hosts Stirling Lions at Rosalie Park.
