Susannah Brook Catchment Group calling for new members

Sarah BrookesHills Avon Valley Gazette

THE Susannah Brook Catchment Group is recruiting volunteers to help breathe new life into the group.

Group spokeswoman Kathryn Johnson said the group started in 2002 to revegetate the public open space around Susannah Lakes and to support the Friends of Blue Wren and Timbertop reserves.

“However, after a decade of active involvement in the catchment the group disbanded,” she said.

“As with many volunteer groups, ongoing community support is necessary to keep momentum in the group and new faces were needed to keep the SBCG going.

“We want to get the group running again to raise the profile of Susannah Brook in the community and to encourage the formation of friends’ groups within the City of Swan.”

Friends of the Blue Wren Reserve co-ordinator Sandy Stone said the Susannah Brook catchment was an important waterway that fed directly into the Swan River.

“It is important that we maintain the ecological health of the Brook as a direct effort to maintain water quality in the Swan River,” she said.

“We also need to establish wildlife corridors within the catchment to counteract the decline of biodiversity due to habitat fragmentation.

“This is a large-scale issue, but by adopting a catchment focus with targeted projects we can work at a local level to restore some of the wildlife corridors necessary to support local wildlife.”

Ms Johnson said the group would initially establish a steering committee to plan projects within the catchment.

She said once the committee was established a timeline of projects would be established based on a review of the Eastern Catchment Management Plan put together by the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council.
