SWAN View Primary School is leading the way on recycling and reducing waste going to landfill.

And teacher Andy Durant is playing a key role as the school’s environmental co-|ordinator.

He said the school recycled its “office grey paper” and its rubbish was sorted into recycling and landfill bins.

“We do the aluminium can recycling, battery recycling along with phones,” he said.

“Our food scraps from lunches go to our worm farms.

“We also recycle printer cartridges; people can send them in from home or we recycle ones out of any of our photocopiers at school.”

The school used donations of mulch on its gardens and any trees that had to be removed for safety reasons were mulched.

Trees in its bushland that had to be lopped were left to rot as “habitat trees”.

“The whole thing is trying to instil in our students to control what they purchase at source,” Mr Durant said.

“For example, buying apples and putting them in your bag, instead of purchasing them in a foam tray covered in Glad wrap.

“So you have the least amount of rubbish.

“It’s a message to the school and the wider community through the parents.”
