City of Joondalup makes case for Federal funding during tour by assistant treasurer Michael Sukkar

Tyler BrownJoondalup Times

FEDERAL assistant treasurer Michael Sukkar was in the City of Joondalup this month to tour some of its major projects.

Moore MHR Ian Goodenough, Joondalup chief executive Garry Hunt, Mayor Troy Pickard, economic development manager Steve Marmion and city project manager Blignault Olivier took the opportunity to highlight some key developments planned for the City and seek Federal support.

These included Boas Place, the Ocean Reef Marina and a proposed performing arts centre, with discussion regarding a Federal contribution of $10 million towards the project.

Mr Goodenough was supportive of the “reasonable funding request” for a performing arts centre that “would add to the vibrancy of Joondalup”.

“Given that in a $100 million project, approximately $10 million would flow to the Federal Government in GST, rather than it be distributed to the eastern states, it would be better spent locally,” he said.

The group also discussed how the City was leading the way when it comes to creating smart satellite cities to alleviate congestion on the roads and in the CBD, allowing companies to utilise ‘hot desks’ in Joondalup, increasing employment in the area and stimulating the economy.

Mr Sukkar said the meeting “demonstrated a drive and passion for developing the City into a major commercial and residential hub”.
