Edgewater: car crashes through building at Joondalup Drive Medical Centre

Mark DonaldsonJoondalup Times

UPDATE, July 6: THE patient who was nearly struck by a car that crashed through a medical clinic in Edgewater yesterday has detailed the close call.

And while John Hollywood would be forgiven for being a little shaken after the experience, the 70-year-old master builder has taken it in his stride.

Mr Hollywood was at a doctor’s appointment late in the afternoon when a hatchback ploughed through the glass frontage of the Joondalup Drive Medical Centre outlet at The Gateway precinct.

He said the car came to rest about “six inches” from him.

“He (the doctor) was just writing out the bill and then BANG… it was lucky we were on the other side of the table,” he said.

“It took me a few seconds to realise what was going on, fortunately none of us are hurt, we were trapped in the corner for about 15 minutes.

“It didn’t upset me or anything, it’s just one of those things that happens.”

The septuagenarian explained an elderly woman was driving the vehicle but he did not ask her how it happened.

Luckily, the woman was uninjured and got out of the car without needing assistance.

“I asked her if she was OK and she just nodded… I think she was in too much shock to actually talk,” Mr Hollywood said.

“She got out of the car OK… the ambulances came but they weren’t really needed.

“It’s a bit ironic – go through a doctor’s surgery and none of us hurt.”

A tow truck removed the vehicle from the wreckage about 4.50pm as St John Ambulance and fire crews watched on.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said no one was taken to hospital.

A DFES spokeswoman said the incident was reported about 4.30pm.

It is unclear what caused the woman to crash the Suzuki.

Police are not believed to have attended.

The Joondalup Drive Medical Centre’s Facebook page reported that the crash had not affected operations and outlets would continue to run as normal today.
