LOCAL motocross racer Regan Duffy has taken out this year’s 125cc Junior Cup.

Despite coming fifth in the third and final round on the Sunshine Coast on August 19, the 15-year-old had enough points to just edge out runner-up Bailey Malkiewicz.

The latter started the day well, securing the fastest qualifying time on his last lap at 1:42.793, followed by Mason Semmens at 1:45.967 and Jack Kukas at 1:46.149.

In race one, Semmens took the holeshot but after just four turns, Malkiewicz took the race lead, which he held until the end.

Kukas had moved to second, pushing Semmens to third but at the last lap, Duffy made his move to take out second place from Kukas in third.

In race two, Noah Ferguson had the home track advantage to take the holeshot, which he held until lap three where Semmens took the lead and Malkiewicz moved to second.

But as the race reached its closing stages, Malkiewicz charged past Semmens to take the win, with Ferguson in third and Duffy 10th after crashing in the final lap.

Malkiewicz claimed the round victory with 70 points, followed by Semmens on 60 and Kukas on 58, but Duffy managed to hold on to the title with 190 points from Malkiewicz on 186 and Semmens on 185.

“I’m a little bit busted up but I’m stoked to come away with the overall for the year,” Duffy said.

“The track wasn’t your typical sand track; I was hoping for some big rollers and stuff but it turned out to be quite choppy and square edged, which ended up catching me out.

“I get good experience racing these junior support classes. I still have a couple of years of junior racing left before I’m racing here in the under-19s class but it’s good to ride the tracks and get to know how things work.”

Also racing on the Sunshine Coast was local rider Kyle Webster in the 10th and final round of the MX2 Championship.

Webster was the fastest to qualify with a lap time of 1:45.681.

Heading in to race one, Isaac Ferguson took the holeshot but after only a lap, Hayden Mellross took the lead and Egan Mastin moved to second.

After four laps, Webster took over second place, which he held until the end, with Mastin comfortably winning and Wilson Todd third.

In the deciding race two, Todd took the holeshot, which he held until lap six where Mastin took the lead.

Webster soon moved in to third place, where he ended the race and the round on 62 points.

This put him in fifth place for the championship on 508 points, with Mastin crowned the winner on 617, Todd second on 612 and Mitchell Evans third on 590.

“This year was definitely good but I’m still not completely satisfied,” Webster said.

“I felt like I rode a lot better than what the results were.

“I struggled massively with starts all year and that made it a lot harder to get to the front.

“I’m still happy to be in the top five though.”
