WAFL finals: West Perth rejuvenated ahead of Swan Districts eliminator

Bill MonaghanJoondalup Times

THE players will take a fair amount of confidence into the elimination final against Swan Districts after the way they handled themselves when challenged in the victory over Claremont last Saturday.

We’ve struggled mentally over the past five or six weeks so it was a boost for us to get a tight win.

We finally took our chances and kicked well in front of goals in the 12.6 (78) to 10.14 (74) triumph.

But it’s a fresh start now that we’re in the finals; what happened in the home and away season is somewhat irrelevant.

We certainly don’t consider the fact we’re unbeaten from two games against Swans this season as an advantage heading into the clash at Bassendean Oval on Sunday.

There might be some things we did well on those days that we’ll need to remind the players about.

But that would be the case even if we’d lost twice to them so the past results have little bearing on how we prepare this time around.

We used Deans Munns against Jye Bolton in the Claremont game so we might use him against David Ellard. Matt Riggio, Adam Faulkner and Jamie Bennell are others we need to watch.

Todd Banfield kicked four goals against us last time so we need to make sure we’ve got his match-up right. Ricky Cary, Tony Notte and Corey Gault in the ruck are another three capable of taking big marks and hurting us on the scoreboard.

So there’s some talent for us to consider, but it’s no greater a task than any other week.

We’re unlikely to make many changes from last week’s team.

The only injury concern was Steve Potente who was treated in hospital after being poked in the eye but it looks like he’ll be fine.
