Developers who secured State planning approval more than seven years ago for a 10-storey hotel in Belmont have been given less than 11 months to begin building.

Plans to build Wyndham Lux Hotel have been in the pipeline since 2017 but have been delayed after multiple extensions.

The hotel would be at 61 Great Eastern Highway and have 120 bedrooms, a restaurant or a bar and office and meeting rooms.

At its Tuesday meeting, the Metro Inner Development Assessment Panel unanimously approved another extension until January 23, 2025, eight years since the original approval.

The development was first approved in 2017 but in 2019 was given a two-year extension, with plans for the project to start in early 2020.

But in April 2020 State Government COVID-19 exemptions were introduced, granting it a further extension to January 2023.

In February 2023 the Joint Development Assessment Panel approved another one-year extension.

“It’s disappointing it’s been going on for so long and continues to go on,” Belmont councillor Phil Marks said at Wednesday’s meeting.

“People have been caught, first of all, with a downturn due to COVID-19 and then of course, trouble with building.”
