An eastern suburbs council has joined almost 15 local councils in a bin-tagging program designed to teach residents on the correct types of rubbish to put into their three kerbside bins.

The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council — a local government body which provides services in waste management and regional development — has secured funding from the WA Waste Authority to run a Bin Tagging Education Program in the Town of Bassendean.

The program — which ran in February and will continue throughout March — will educate residents on how to correctly use their FOGO, general waste and recycling bins by having “waste educators” assess the contents of each bin.

“They will attach informative tags to the bin handles, offering tailored advice to households on proper waste disposal practices,” the Town of Bassendean’s website reads.

“This hands-on approach is designed to empower residents with knowledge about what items are suitable for each bin.

“The program aims to reduce waste contamination, which reduces waste disposal costs and increases material recovery, providing real benefits for the community and environment.”

The City of Fremantle, City of Subiaco, City of Vincent and Town of Claremont are among other local councils who have also participated in bin tagging programs.

Since implementing the three-bin FOGO system in 2020, the Town of Bassendean’s kerbside diversion rate has risen from 16 to 67 per cent, meaning 51 per cent more waste is being recovered and diverted from landfill.
