Spearwood friendship hub set to mark first anniversary

Gabrielle Becerra MelletPerthNow - Cockburn

A disability support service provider will soon reach its first anniversary of hosting a monthly friendship hub.

Spearwood-based 4lifeskills runs a monthly meeting for community members and people with disabilities to develop social connections.

The event comprises social activities such as karaoke, bingo, live sports entertainment or cornhole tournaments.

Support worker Valama Sheriff said the hub— which kicked off after the company was approached by the City of Cockburn— was an opportunity for people to socialise.

He said the event built confidence among its attendees, who often otherwise faced weekends alone.

“I’ve been a support worker for over 10 years and I know sometimes people can be isolated,” he said.

“It’s a great place for them to come and meet new people or even old friends, have a chat and enjoy the environment.”

4lifeskills chief executive Johanna Cook said the hub had steadily grown in numbers since its inaugural event in April last year.

“We have a good reception from our community members who don’t usually go out on weekends,” she said.

“We see more engagement from them during our friendship hub events compared to their normal day-to-day supports, which is very fulfilling to see.”

The next friendship hub will be held on March 23 before it marks its first anniversary in April.

The friendship hub is $15 entry at the door.
