‘The Quadrangle’: The innovative theatre set to show in Cockburn

Gabrielle Becerra MelletPerthNow - Cockburn

Accomplished Perth artists are set to take centre stage in Hamilton Hill this weekend — but it’s not theatre as you know it.

Creatives Georgia King and Mark Storen are front and centre in The Quadrangle — a “headphone verbatim performance” that will tell stories of young people growing up via their own voices.

But King and Storen are not “young people”, in the sense of the performance.

Their innovative theatre type involves pre-recorded voices of young people being fed to actors through headphones, who speak their words in real time on stage.

About 10 young people aged six to 16 have been interviewed in pairs for The Quadrangle, which will be shown at Memorial Hall this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The performances are designed for all ages and will reveal “common human threads” of growing up.

City of Cockburn mayor Logan Howlett said the theatre, which is part of the city’s Cockburn Live program, was a way to elevate youth voices in the community.

“The Quadrangle will be an opportunity to experience a new, memorable and entertaining art form — an appropriately thought-provoking way to really listen to what our youth are feeling and saying at this time in history,” he said.
