The all-female circus set to perform in Fremantle this International Street Arts Festival

Gabrielle Becerra MelletPerthNow - Fremantle

A 3m-high stilt walking troupe and an all-female circus will be some of the groups to line Fremantle’s streets next month.

Weeks out from the International Street Arts Festival, world-class performers and local artists are gearing up to set the southern streets alive during the annual Easter event.

For homegrown femme circus YUCK, it will be the first time the group has taken part in a free street performance.

Director and acrobat Georgia Deguara said the move was a long time coming.

“It’s been a long-time relationship that’s finally come to fruition, we’re really excited to be out there and doing stuff,” she said.

“It makes us change our content as well and the way we present our work.”

The high-flying acrobats will arrive in Fremantle off the back of national tours and Deguara said the street festival called for a different approach to performing.

“They’re specialised art in that the performer will work with the crowd they have on the street,” she said.

“It’s very immersive and it’s a two-way conversation.

“There’s outside conditions, like the weather (and) not having aerials.”

Stilt walkers AFUMA will make their Australian debut 3m above the ground, while Latin showman Mario Queen of the Circus will also join the line-up.

Nearby, Fremantle mainstay Old Courthouse will offer a “bubble canteen”, with more than 12,000 bubbles per minute to take over the venue.

This year’s gala will also see some entertainment continue after dark when a free silent disco pops up on South Terrace.

FSIAF producer Brendan Coleman said the 2024 line-up took the event to a “new level”.

“Artists flock to FISAF from all corners of the globe eager to become part of Fremantle’s rich and storied history of world-class street theatre,” he said.

“Those lucky enough to be here this Easter will experience these extraordinary international performers while lapping up the delicious special treats that Freo is serving up across the FISAF long weekend.”

The FSIAF will run from March 29 to April 1.
