Joondalup Festival launches with free light installation Electric Kingdom at Hillarys marina & Pram People

PerthNow - Joondalup

The 2024 Joondalup Festival will officially open this weekend with the launch of Electric Kingdom and continue next week with Pram People among an array of immersive experiences on this year’s agenda.

Designed to inspire and connect the community through its ‘art for all’ philosophy, the annual festival will include more than 30 performances, installations and experiences brought to life across the City of Joondalup from March 2 to 22.

Electric Kingdom will see glowing animals of epic proportions take over Hillarys Boat Harbour from 6pm on Saturday, March 2, for nearly three weeks in what will be a WA debut.

Among the first week of performances, festival-goers can catch a range of free and ticketed events, including:

Bruce, March 6: A high octane, low-fi adult puppetry spectacular featuring a floating block of yellow foam that will melt your heart in an incredible comedic story of a self-proclaimed hero-cop turned novelist-astronaut.

Pram People, March 6-8: Presented by Polyglot Theatre, this performance invites community participation through movement and connection, using the most universal of vehicles - the pram. The experience is made specially for children who ride in prams and the adults who push them.

Aretha: March 8, 9: A love letter to the Queen of Soul, Aretha is a powerful memoir, live on stage, that celebrates the life and music of Aretha Franklin in this WA debut.

Joondalup mayor Albert Jacob said the city was thrilled to be opening the festival with a free installation at Hillarys to excite people of all ages.

“Joondalup Festival has been designed to bring our community together and invite visitors into our community to experience something different. Art has the moving ability to connect and inspire people and through our free installations including Electric Kingdom we aim to do exactly that,” Mr Jacob said.

“With an array of activities and experiences over three weeks, we have something for everyone to enjoy at Joondalup Festival. From first nations-led circus performances in stunning natural locations, to immersive pram experiences.”
