What’s on Good Friday in Perth: festivals, football, cult burger shop openings, horses and more

Matt ZisPerthNow - Western Suburbs

The supermarket majors might be closed and there’s no daily newspaper — but there’s still plenty to do on Good Friday around Perth for those so inclined.

Cult burger chain Milky Lane has chosen Good Friday to throw open the doors of its new Currambine outlet, its first in the northern suburbs.

And while traditions decree fish should be the order of the day, Currambine store owner Rae Strauss expects a rush of bookings from people who can’t wait to sample Milky Lane’s line of burgers or Insta-worthy cocktails, shakes and desserts.

“We wanted to be open for Easter as our Easter specials this year are next level,” he said.

The Fremantle International Street Arts Festival also opens Good Friday, kicking off four days of free street theatre fun and shows in the port city.

As does Jurassic Kingdom, a dinosaur theme park at Burswood Park with ticketed day and night sessions full of fun rides among the moving and roaring rexes and raptors.

The Fremantle Dockers will feature in their first Good Friday clash when they host Adelaide at Optus Stadium. Boucedown is 4.20pm and the Dockers will be keen for a better turnout than West Coast got in the marquee timeslot two years ago.

That match was played under COVID-crowd restrictions and many of the 42,888 who made it through the gate were gone by quarter-time as the Eagles took a mauling from the Sydney Swans.

There’s also free entry to Ascot Racecourse for an afternoon of horse racing, plus activities for children in the crowd, as part of the Good Friday Family Raceday.

And if you feel like a punt but can’t get to the track, selected TAB stores will also be open. Crown Casino will be closed all day, reopening at 10pm. Gamble responsibly, of course.
