“We’re pushing the boundaries,” she said.

“The support we’ve had is phenomenal, so many jumped on board and got behind us.”

Natalie has plans to open up the caf for dinner parties, special occasions, which will feature the ever popular grazing platters.

The popular local Good Nights concept is coming to Mataya on August 3 with the Ahern Brothers playing a set.

The cafe is currently BYO but a liquor licence application is in the works.

In summer, Natalie hopes to take over the courtyard area around the caf and create a vibrant space.

She’s sits on the board of Shape Mandurah and it was this role which led her to contract Ricky Gibson to create a mural on the stair case above the caf.

Ricky has been painting murals for about eight years as a side project.

“Mataya had a certain aesthetic they were looking to portray at the cafe, using their direction I found inspiration in nature,” he said.

“Personally I would rather see a wall with some art as opposed to boring brown brick wall.”

Ricky said projects, like the one at Mataya, brighten a city’s urban environment.

“It can create interaction, inspiration and creativity within the community,” he said.

“I was approached by people of different ages with positive feed back while I was painting, the overall reaction was positive.”
