Club celebrates its proud

Published author and club member Christine Oldfield has spent the past two-and-a-half years researching and writing Right from the Start to coincide with the WA institution’s fourth decade.

McCallum Park, once referred to as ‘Club HQ’ where AGMs were held under a shady tree, is the venue for a 7am run on Sunday, February 9, followed by a few speeches to mark the anniversary and book launch.

‘Club HQ was where the original club members used to gather on Sunday mornings. Here they held races and trained or just enjoyed a casual run around the bridges ” and some developed their throwing skills with the shot, discus and javelin,’ Ms Oldfield said.

The 69-year-old, who lives in the UK for six months of the year, first joined the club with her husband John in the 1990s and rejoined in 2005.

‘My husband was maintaining the results and club database and he said someone should write a history of the club, and so it started there,’ she said.

The book’s publication has been made possible by a $1500 Lotterywest grant and 500 will be printed, with 20 per cent provided free of charge to councils and libraries.

It will cost $15 and will be available at the February 9 event.

An early bird price of $10 is available to anyone who orders and pays cash for the book by February 2.
