THEY may appear cute and cuddly on the outside, but a competitive edge lurks within a motley line-up of mascots that will be strutting their stuff during Peel Thunder’s opening home game of the season this Saturday.

Most of the competitors had a practice run last week, with the early favourites appearing to be the State Emergency Services pair of Sniffa and Bernie.

Also taking part will be the Thunder’s mighty Thor, Community Newspaper Group’s own Mr Newsie, Boost Juice Barry, Mr Hooker Bear, Boss Hog and Bendigo Bank Piggie.

The event is supported by the Bendigo Bank as part of a family fun day with lots of activities for children.

Bendigo Bank marketing administration co-ordinator Sharon Hooper said there would also be face painting, fairy floss, baloons, and the bank’s mini-bank will also be making an appearance.

She said last year’s family day event was cancelled due to thunderstorms and was hoping this Saturday’s weather would be better.
