IT has been a long time in the making but Tamara Moss is finally ready to launch her debut book Lintang and the Pirate Queen.

Mrs Moss has been writing seriously for more than 16 years but only decided to make the switch from young adult fiction to children’s books after landing a job as a teacher at Ardross Primary School.

“I wanted to write a book for a primary school-aged audience and had been thinking about writing about the high seas for a while, so I decided to just go for it,” she said.

After a lot of research – including reading a draft of the book to her Year 4 and 5 classes and making changes based on their reactions – Mrs Moss submitted the finished manuscript last June.

“I’ve submitted work for 10 years without getting a contract, so when the publisher said yes I couldn’t have been happier,” she said.

Lintang and the Pirate Queen is a fantasy adventure about a curious, courageous girl who wants to escape her stunning but stifling tropical island home.

“Lintang really wants to go travelling and gets her chance when the Pirate Queen comes to her island and they end up going on an adventure hunting mythical creatures on the sea,” Mrs Moss said.

The book, being published by Penguin Random House Australia, is the first in a three-part series and has already attracted a US publishing deal.

Mrs Moss is officially launching the book at Ardross Primary School from 4.45pm on Monday, July 31.
