Opinion: Parents also responsible for children’s road safety

Colin Delane, LeemingMelville Gazette

IN THE Streetwatch segment of the May 9 edition of the Melville Times, WAPOL Senior Sergeant Gavin Radice issues a “… reminder that children of all ages (and for that matter adults) are unpredictable when crossing roads and we all have to be vigilant”.

Whilst on the face of it this seems reasonable, a more objective view demands that motorists not be lumbered with full responsibility for the outcome of an errant pedestrian.

Accordingly, I suggest that future “reminders” also be directed at parents to counsel and educate their children about the risks and responsibilities of being a pedestrian, and how to behave when on the roads.
