Soccer: Melville City’s unbeaten run comes to an end in 2-0 loss to Shamrock Rovers

Ben SmithMelville Gazette

MELVILLE City’s five-game unbeaten streak came to an abrupt end following a 2-0 loss to Shamrock Rovers at Harold Rossiter Reserve.

Despite creating more chances, the visitors were unable find the net and Shamrock clinically pounced on two defensive errors to claim victory.

The loss dented Melville’s top-four aspirations, although it remains within striking distance of the playoffs.

City started strongly and were almost rewarded when Tre Gaffney bounced a header over the bar following Mark Lucas’ great cross, before Lucas’ stinging shot flew inches wide of the post.

However, Rovers took the lead when Shaz Ghafari turned the ball over deep in his own half, leaving Daniel Agudelo stranded in no-man’s land as a Shamrock striker gleefully fired home.

Friday Zico and Adam Mangion were unable to convert close-range chances for Melville, who were incensed when Amel Dzaferovic appeared to be dragged down inside the box, only for the referee to wave away their protests.

The away side’s task was made trickier after the interval when a Rovers forward collected a nice pass over the top of the defence and his shot slipped underneath Agudelo.

Melville continued to attack, but were largely unable to test the keeper, although Zico was inches away from converting Grant Mowatt’s low cross.

Shamrock continued to hold strong and Melville knew it was not their day when Mowatt beat the offside trap and rounded the keeper, but fired wide.
