Sports trainee shines

Staff ReporterMelville Gazette

The 22-year-old hockey star, who has been doing a traineeship at Chisholm College since 2009, has recently taken out this year’s AFL SportsReady WA Host Plus Trainee of the Year Award, beating 34 other trainee graduates for the award.

Since graduating, he has taken up a PE Assistant role at the private college in Bedford.

The Leeming resident, who spends about 20 hours a week at hockey training and 30 hours teaching at school, said he was surprised by the award and was excited to share his knowledge with the future generation.

‘I was definitely surprised to win it having never really won an award like this one before, with most of my achievements coming in the sporting areas of my life,’ he said.

AFL SportsReady chief executive James Montgomery said Mitton’s hard work during his traineeship had reaped him the reward of Trainee of the Year.

‘He really is a great example of how elite sport can be balanced with work and study,’ he said.
