Mr Griffin, who has been collecting different Bundaberg Rum drops for almost three years, was able to put his love and knowledge to the test after being selected as one of 30 Australians to review a limited-edition rum.

The rum aficionado was so impressed that he gave it full marks, with a score of 10 out of 10.

But the rum lover almost missed out on the opportunity to be one of the first to taste-test the Master Distillers’ Collection-Dark Oak.

‘I saw the competition for reviewers advertised but I almost missed the submission date because I was on my honeymoon,’ he said.

Mr Griffin’s submission was accepted and the 50ml tester bottle was mailed out to him.

He said his first impression was of the darkness of the liquid.

‘As the name suggests, it’s a nice-looking dark product,’ he said.

‘When I first tasted it, the rich, smooth flavour of the rum was very enjoyable.

‘It still had the trademark Bundaberg Rum flavour but the oak barrels have given it a much smoother finish.’

About 60,000 individually numbered bottles of the Master Distillers Collection-Dark Oak are expected to be released by Bundaberg Rum soon.
