Youths make their mark on carpark

Seven local artists, aged between 17 and 25 years, have left their mark on the carpark walls over the last eight weeks.

Swan City youth service representative and veteran graffiti artist Shime ( Mike Barker) helped design and complete the mural.

The Midland Gate partnership started two years ago and has resulted in various youth urban art on the carpark walls.

The urban artwork mural project was designed to instil confidence and teamwork in young people.

It was considered a natural extension of City of Swan's Better Way graffiti reduction program, which lost government funding in 2013.

Midland Gate manager Jacqueline McKenzie said the centre was thrilled with the art.

"The urban artwork mural project helps break down barriers between our local youths and the rest of the community, provide a healthy, safe outlet for their creative expression, and promote a greater understanding of urban art, which is so much more than graffiti," she said.
