Cottesloe Beach: Man pulled from water by Surf Life Savers tragically dies

A man who was pulled from the water at Cottesloe beach has died despite desperate efforts to save him.

Bystanders spotted the man unconscious near a rock breakwater on Sunday afternoon before rushing to get the attention of Surf Life Savers as others began to pull the man to shore.

It is understood Surf Life Savers worked to resuscitate the man, first by hand and then using a defibrillator machine until emergency services arrived.

The man was rushed to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital under lights and sirens but died by the time he reached the hospital.

Holidaymaker from Sydney Uvin Kojitha, saw the incident unfold and helped lifeguards by holding up a towel to protect the man from view.

He is understood to have been swimming alone.

Surf Life Savers were seen searching the beach for belongings that might help identify him.
