Suburb of residence:  Southern River

Are you a member of a political party:  Yes  (Liberal)

About me:
I am very much a people person, and will make myself available to meet with residents and community groups.  I have had a varied career:  I am a qualified agricultural scientist, and take a keen interest in environmental issues.  Being involved in pastoral work for 25 years including working in Palliative Care and drug rehabilitation has given me many helpful insights.  My 8 years in the state parliament give me a good understanding of  government, and will allow me to contribute from day one if I am elected. I am committed to  serving the community.  I currently serve on the school boards of Canning Vale College, Southern River College, Bletchley Park PS and chair Ashburton Drive School Council.   I am also involved in a number of community organisations. My wife and I have five married adult children and 11 grandchildren, so we understand the pressures that families experience.

Why I’m running for council:
Helping people and working to improve our community is my passion. I have a great rapport with many residents in the City from my 8 years as a state MP. I have helped thousands resolve their issues with government, and I would welcome the opportunity  to continue to help people resolve their concerns. My experience and understanding of government processes will allow me to make a significant contribution to advancing the interests of our city.
I know how to get things done, and have a strong working relationship with senior City staff .  Many of the road works, including the Nicholson Road rail overpass, are the result of my efforts. While I consider the City of Gosnells to be a great place to live and raise a family,   I   think we need to continually be looking to improve the amenity of our City.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • Be accessible to residents and follow through on their local concerns
  • New developments to make provision for community facilities (community halls, places of worship etc)

Why I’m running for council:
All nominees seem to say the same thing about wanting to make a difference but how many will actually step outside the box to instigate that change? I am someone who doesn’t sit on the sidelines waiting for things to happen. I have already contacted some agencies regarding my below priorities. As a community, we need to do more, to be more proactive and to communicate more (between Councillors and Voters) if we are to battle the issues below. My priorities are very important to me and I am keen to see new ideas implemented. I am running for Council so I can have a say for those who are not able to do so. I DO want to make a difference. If we can help just one person from each of my lists below, then voting for me was worth it.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • To work with Government agencies to keep our streets safe. We HAVE to do more
  • To see Youth Suicide addressed with more awareness and support

Are you a member of a political party: WA Labor

About me:
I am the current 2017 Community Young Citizen of the Year for the City of Gosnells. I am 19 years of age, I work locally and am currently studying. I have lived the City all of my life and I want to see the city to continue to improve.

Why I’m running for council: I am running for council to help create a better city for now and the future. I want an active, happy and productive vibrant city. Our city lacks vibrancy and needs to become more modern. The city has issues with antisocial behaviour, unemployment, and a lack of vibrancy. I believe we need to do more to help community groups and give more funding to community services to help improve the quality of life for the residents and the greater community. We need more local jobs and I want more development and redevelopment of older areas in our city to provide jobs and to support local industry.
I might be young but I hope to provide young fresh perspective and re-energize the council.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • Increase transparency and community engagement with the council.
  • Support the redevelopment of the city centres
  • Keep rates low to support those that can least afford them.

Are you a member of a political party: No.

About me:
I have worked as a business owner and director in private and public companies. My experience ranges from technical advisor through to general management roles in industries such as sales, marketing, recruitment, productivity and growth. I worked in many areas and regions where businesses and organisations have been under achieving and helped them grow. I believe I can bring a diversity of experience and understanding of what it is like to want to build a better future for people and their families. I have current knowledge of relevant business practices, backed up by many years of practice in accounting, management, governance and marketing. I live in Gosnells and greatly enjoy golf and music as a way of relaxing. I believe…
“Everyone has courage and vision to achieve something better for their family and they deserve all the help they can get and need.”

Why I’m running for council:
I believe that the City needs to prepare for its future as growing residential area and a hub for increased business and industry. There are new challenges. More customers are purchasing over the internet. This has already affected retail services and retail sites, as well as transport services. The city will need innovative solutions so that the businesses and jobs that are created can be sustained. At a local level, the City may be able to coordinate resources and encourage groups who are interested in innovation. I see several areas where my background and experience may help come up with the strategies needed. It is an exciting time and we have the chance to build something from a very good base. The need is there. We just have to find good ways to fill it.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • Economic development with innovation
  • Improved services
  • More benefits and facilities for Ratepayers

Are you a member of a political party: Yes (Australian Christians)

About me:
Australia became my adoptive country 47 years ago after migrating from France where I was born and educated. Since then, I was given great opportunities to complete studies in Education and Christian studies, obtaining a Master Degree in Education and working for 30 years as a high school teacher. I am an active member of a local church in Gosnells. My greatest blessing has been to experience the joy of seeing my own children and their friends being raised in a safe environment with the help of a caring community. They are now, in turn, helping raise the next generation of young people. My heart desire is to support all families, irrespective of their background or situation, in their crucial but often difficult role of educators in our fast-pace, fast changing and often confusing world.

Why I’m running for council:
I would like to contribute to the work of the city where I have enjoyed living for the past 23 years and where I worked as a teacher in a local high school for many years. I hope to use my experience and background to make a positive contribution to the work of my city in its provision of quality services, accessible to all families. I believe people of all ages are our greatest assets and I want to learn how the city can best meet their needs and encourage their talents. Gosnells is a fast growing, multi-cultural city. Like many Australians, I have a multi-cultural background. I enjoy discovering the richness and diversity of people, seeking harmony in all human relationships.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • As a new councillor, I want first to learn from the experience of others and from training available, how to become an effective council member and how current issues are being addressed by council.
  • I want to become better acquainted with services available to individual and families, their ease of accessibility and whether needs are being met.
  • I would like to investigate and promote local training and employment opportunities in our city

The local community has kindly supported my small business for 20 years. Over this time I have regularly contributed to local sports clubs, schools and churches, however with your help I can do more. My wife and I with our two teenage boys advocate strongly for family values and recognise good family structure as an important part of having a safe community. The City of Gosnells has been our home for 20 years and I understand the concerns and issues that affect your neighbourhood. I am particularly passionate about improving services including youth engagement, increasing access to mental health support, measures that actively target reduced crime, and empowering our elderly community to live independently.

Why I’m running for council:
I humbly request your vote to serve you as a Councillor. I will represent with integrity, dedication, ensure your rates are kept low and allocated wisely to allow for our great City to achieve great things.

Name: David Groves
Email: davidgroves@hotmail.com

Are you a member of a political party: Did not respond.

About me:
I have lived in the City of Gosnells with my wife for over 26 years, my grown-up children live in east and west Maddington and my wife’s parents live in Huntingdale. We have all been active in this community for many decades, raising funds for local schools, helping the scouts and local community events. I ran the refreshment stand at the Council’s Ghost Walk on Friday nights to raise funds for the Scouts. I take an interest in community issues and I have attended meetings at Council. Our whole family has never missed the ANZAC Day commemorative service at Gosnells Civic Centre Gardens. More information about me, what I consider are high level issues, my qualifications and experience is available at davidgroves.info. I retired early from managing technology so I now I feel I have plenty of time to be a Councillor.

Why I’m running for council:
I started attending meetings in the community and council when I moved into the City of Gosnells as I became aware there were issues of major concern. Dust; noise; vibration; pollution; increasing heavy traffic; roads bounded by drainage ditches; no footpaths; incinerator for Maddington; water table impact by filling the quarry; etc. Whilst attending these meetings I frequently felt individuals or small groups were not treated as sympathetically as I would like. At the Council meeting September 2017, I was motivated into action to become a candidate when a complicate issue appeared to be raised in the meeting rather than being addressed before it. Now I am retired I can devote a large amount of time to critically analyse issues to support the minority. In the future parts of the majority may find themselves in the minority and needing this type of help.

My top three priorities are:

  • Move to a truly secular government where all people, organisations and religions are treated equally and appropriately;
  • Provide downward pressure on the significant annual increase to the cost of our rates;
  • Prioritise spending on footpaths so residents do not have to walk in the roads because of drainage ditches or fear of tripping on nature strips and sand traps.

Member of a political party: No

About me:
A retired Telecommunications Engineer, I contributed to the transition from party lines to fibre optics and served United Nations and Asia Pacific Telecommunity assignments in Vietnam.
My wife Coralie and I have lived in the City of Gosnells since 1969. I held leadership positions in Anglican communities and movements over many years.
In retirement, I ran a consultancy business and have a keen interest in Music.

Why I’m running for council:
Gosnells has had a proud environmental record over the last twenty years, and I’d like to extend that to ethical investment.
I am keen for Gosnells to be an early adopter of new energy and transport technologies that offer a cleaner, healthier, sustainable and more affordable environment, drawing down existing atmospheric carbon through appropriate waste treatment processes. I am keen to link into Local Government partnerships across Australia to fill, from the lowest levels of Government, the leadership void that exists at the top.

On a personal note I love all types of sport and I am involved with Thornlie Football and Sports Club (Inc.) a community sports club, as the Chairman of Directors. I have been with the club since 1982 and had Life Membership bestowed upon me in 2001

Suburb: Maddington

Member of a political party: No

About me:
I have nominated for the Gosnells Council because I am concerned about a number of problems seriously affecting the quality of suburban life in decades ahead. Some of them may only appear serious and pressing to those getting older and reaching retirement age – like myself. At that point you start to worry more about your children than yourself. Time moves more quickly as you grow older and a few decades seem nothing. I grew up in Kenwick and Maddington and returned 7 years ago. I was formerly an academic – teaching politics and planning at a number of universities.

Why I’m running for council:
I run for Council as an independent, not affiliated with any ticket or political party. Such affiliations can confuse councillors and result in divided loyalties. My intention is to serve ratepayers and the local community first.
My top three priorities if elected

  • Urban density and consolidation
  • Housing Affordability
  • Cleaning and Greening Public Space

I know my experiences as a husband, father, FIFO worker, junior basketball coach and involvement with local football and cricket clubs and local primary schools will help me continue to serve our community and I am confident I have the contacts and skills to really make a difference. My professional background and diverse range of training and experience will see me become an efficient and effective councillor.

Why I’m running for council:
I am passionate about providing opportunities in our community. As a FIFO parent I know how important quality family time can be, and I have a strong focus on maintaining and improving recreational facilities within the City of Gosnells. I also know we need to provide the next generation with opportunities working with schools, training and local organisations.
I see the community growing strongly, but also areas in which we could do more to keep up with the wants and needs of a thriving modern society. I’d like to address the concerns of our local community while focusing on what I believe will serve our residents best. If elected, I’ll ensure the City of Gosnells continues to move from strength to strength in its service to our local community.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • Improved facilities
  • Opportunities for growth
  • Focus on families

About me:
I am a mum of two young children in Southern River and a 3rd generation resident in the City, I’ve experienced this City myself as a child, teenager, professional and now a mother.
I understand the importance of the local parks, schools, clubs, businesses and community services. I am dedicated to improving these facilities and services to make the city a better, safer, more vibrant place for the future of our children, families and seniors. Professionally I’m a Chartered Accountant, with this I bring valuable skills to council, including expert business, financial and policy experience. I’m a member of the Huntingdale Primary School P&C and recently I successfully advocated for Bletchley Park families to ensure their children have a safe location for kindergarten. I will listen, ask questions, seek answers and solutions. I stand for integrity, objectivity and informed decision making. I will be a strong voice for our community.

Why I’m running for council:
I feel local families are underrepresented on council, I am not your stereotypical councillor, I am a 35 year old mum and understand the needs of local families. In fulfilling my duties as a councillor I will be a strong voice for our families and seniors, I will fight for what’s right for our community. I have the professional skills to make sure the community gets the best value from its assets and implements practical policies. I value community engagement, as I believe the people impacted by council decisions should have a fair opportunity to be heard. As a new councillor, I will be asking, what can we do better for our community and look for solutions. I am not aligned with any specific interest groups, I will be able to act without bias to make ethical, informed decisions to represent the best interests of the entire community we serve.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • Expanding strategies to support and engage seniors with social, recreational, health and wellness programs whilst improving their safety within the City.
  • Providing greater support to local schools and local families through City funded programs and services targeting children and youth.
  • Establishing new recreational facilities in growing areas of the City, whilst continuing to upgrade and redevelop the existing recreational complexes and facilities.
