Am I a member of a political party? No

About me:
I am a communications and marketing specialist. After graduating from WAAPA, I embarked on a career in journalism as a cadet reporter with the ABC. I specialised in business and finance reporting, working in Sydney on flagship current affairs programs including AM, PM, The World Today and Lateline. After presenting on ABC News 24, I concluded a decade long media career and returned to Perth to start a niche marketing business – Bain Media. I have developed strategy and cross-platform brand campaigns for more than 30 high profile clients including the Government, property developers and tourism operators. I’m a helicopter and fixed wing pilot. I’ve traversed most of Australia and produced a documentary on the unique tribal habits of the Martu People. My company has Executive Producer credits in Australian motion pictures; Blue Dog and Yagan. I’ve also served on the board of Perth contemporary dance company Co3.

Why I’m running:
I’m very much out of my comfort zone nominating, but Perth has been let down by the existing administration and I feel compelled to do something. I look around at my home City and wonder why it still hasn’t reached its potential. Businesses are struggling to survive. The City is full of dead zones that need to be activated. Tourism numbers are at record lows, For Lease signs are everywhere, cafes and restaurants are going broke – and yet the Council thinks it’s fair to axe free parking. It’s perverse. The City is in crisis. To get things moving we need to say a little more yes and a lot less no. Emergency measures are needed to immediately encourage activity in the CBD and its surrounds. The Council needs an attitude reset – and as someone who’s never been involved in politics I can be trusted to deliver results.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • City activation via the use of opportunistic events, festival and pop-ups
  • Removing barriers to enable small business to innovate and be cost competitive
  • Improve city access through international flights, transport solutions and reduced parking fees

Are you a member of a political party? No, Independant

About me:
I am a qualified CPA, who is the Finance Manager for a leading Agricultural business. I’ve helped grow the business from a small family business to one that is now the largest in its field in Australia. Having helped grow a small business and being in the business environment, and I have a deep understanding of the elements that business need to adapt to and face to be successful. I have always had a drive to support local community groups by either being involved in local sporting groups to drive youth development or to provide my financial knowledge to ensure that these local sporting groups can continue to develop our children for the future. I have also volunteered for numerous events from Relay for Life to volunteering as Treasurer for inner city strata buildings. I want to see the best for our community and for this great city.

Why I’m running for council:
I’ve lived on the west end of Murray Street for some time and have a deep passion for this great city. The recent governance of the City of Perth has left much to be desired for many families and business with this great city. I want to bring back our community values, respect and accountability to the council, and to have it listen to the community. Over the last four years the City of Perth has endured a council that has been embroiled in scandals. I want to bring respect back to the city with the highest levels of integrity and ethics, all while pushing progressive changes to a council that is currently not in tune with the people or the current economic climate. My mission is to have a City that is a world leader, that listens and works to the betterment of society.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • Improved Council Governance
  • Supportive Business Strategies
  • Improved Community Initiatives

Are you a member of a political party? No

About me:
Reece Harley is Founding Chair and Executive Director of the Museum of Perth. He was elected a City of Perth Councillor in 2013 and ran for Lord Mayor in 2015.  Before his election to Council Reece ran small-bar and history walking tours of Perth, sharing his knowledge of Perth with hundreds of visitors and locals alike. Reece has worked across various West Australian universities and was the founding State Director of an indigenous mentoring organisation, supporting more than 1,000 West Australian indigenous high school students into university, further study and employment. He holds a Bachelor of Communication with a Major in Political and International Studies from Murdoch University. Reece is a founding member of the Rotary Club of Crawley and serves on a range of committees and boards including Heritage Perth. Reece is a City of Perth property owner and a passionate advocate for Perth.

Why I’m running for council:
It’s time to get our City back on track. This October you have the power to elect Councillors who will rebuild confidence and pride in our great City. You deserve representatives who listen, who have integrity and who put our community first. I was first elected to Council in 2013 and ran for Lord Mayor in 2015. Over the past four years I have championed change: greater vibrancy and street activity; cutting red tape; supporting small business; cheaper parking; cycling infrastructure; improving council transparency and cutting wasteful spending. I have listened to the community and commit to: strong financial management; a respectful relationship with State Government; smarter parking strategies; a plan to tackle homelessness; community safety initiatives; and to my continued transparency, ethics and hard work. I ask for your support and encourage you to also vote for Steve Hasluck to get this City back on track.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • Strong financial management in order to deliver balanced surplus budgets so that we can continue to invest infrastructure upgrades and community services
  • Restoring and maintaining a respectful relationship with State Government so that we can work collaboratively in the City’s best interests
  • Continued transparency, accountability, ethics and hard work.

Are you a member of a political party? No

About me:
I’m a long term Perth resident with my partner and a born and bred Sandgroper. I love my coffee and enjoy visiting local cafes chatting with the locals and reading the paper. I love street art and on the weekends often seek out new spaces to take photos of the works. I have two beautiful nieces who I love spending time with as much as possible. I have been in Real Estate for 20 years (sales and property management) and specialise in commercial property management.

Why I’m running for council:
I’m running for the first time because our city deserves better. I believe we need new, positive leadership that will drive real and practical change for residents, business and property owners. We can raise the standard of community engagement, council debate and accountability. As a long term city resident, I have seen the small businesses of Perth getting quieter and quieter and many closing up shop entirely. The City can do small things that will make a huge difference such as the implementation of  a full review of the parking charges. A coherent plan for homelessness, stronger investment in community safety/lighting programs, renewed focus on pedestrian and cycling safety; and expanding senior support services. Red tape is strangling businesses along with residents and the process needs to be simplified and approvals sped up.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • First 30 minute/one hour parking free
  • Improve the cycling infrastructure
  • Reform and simplify the approvals process

About me:
For over 20 years was involved with community housing at a national, state and local level. From 1983 to mid 90s managed various lodging houses in Perth city area, mainly crisis accommodation. I became a public advocate for the housing and duty of care mainly to mental health out-patents. In 1998 received a federal community service award for voluntary work as a social justice advocate to the needy and socially disadvantaged. In 1999 received the same award for voluntary work in community housing and representing the interests of inner city residents. Selected as tenant representative on National Community Housing Forum’s Standards and Accreditation Council in 2000 and elected Chair in 2005. A Founding director and life member of Foundation Housing Ltd. Convener of City Residents Action Group (now defunct) in 1997 formed to lobby Perth City Council to develop pro-active social policies and to encourage affordable housing within Perth city.

Why I’m running for council:
As a City resident and Council observer for over 20 years I am across all City issues, attend Council meetings and have a working knowledge of its Standing Orders and the Local Government Act. I have watched closely the growth of our city in recent years, from blueprints to the development of new infrastructure and streetscapes. I am keen to ensure all needs are met but it is quite apparent that social issues such as homelessness and begging are not receiving the support needed from the State Government agencies and policing. If elected, I promise three things. To vote on each proposal on merit with community consultation, I will be available at Council House each week day as a full-time Councillor and political independence. I seek your vote to enable me to work for you, residents and business, for the betterment of our local community and the City.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • Enhanced streetscapes and cleaning regimens
  • Homelessness
  • Policing

Are you a member of a political party? Did not disclose

About me:
I consider Perth as my home having been here since 1991 as a student and subsequently deciding to stay and work in this fantastic City. Over the years, I have worked as a legal assistant, five year Article Clerk and a Lawyer. I was appointed by the Supreme Court of WA as the first female Asian Notary Public to serve the local community. As President of All for Charity (Australia) Inc., I am actively involved in charity work to help the needy, disabled and homeless people. As a career-woman, I am dedicated in my work, focused, and determined when I set my mind on a task. I believe that I am capable to channel my focus onto the various issues affecting residents, small businesses and visitors to Perth. I am available any time of the day and am readily accessible to help out those who require my assistance.

Why I’m running for council:
I am running to fight to remove excessive red-tape for small businesses to ensure that they grow and improve our economy as I believe that small businesses are the back-bone of Perth. I will ensure that Perth reaches its full potential as a global city like other great cities of the world through better tourist attractions and more local and international events held to attract more visitors. I will attract investments into our City and improve the facilities here to meet the growing demands of our residents and small businesses. As a local business owner, I understand the frustrations of small businesses and will work hard to address your concerns. I will ensure visitors, business owners and residents feel safe by working together with local law enforcement. I will ensure that Perth becomes a sustainable City by being more environmentally friendly. I will work diligently on your behalf.

My top three priorities if elected:

  • – Efficiency of Perth City Council;
