Jessica WarrinerSouthern Gazette

STARICK are ready to lend a hand to women and children in need thanks to their newly refurbished op shop.

The Cloverdale store has had a facelift inside, with the Fresh Start secondhand shop looking brighter and better than ever.

Starick assists women and children affected by domestic violence, and chief executive Leanne Barron said the new shop will both raise money and provide more clothing to help people in crisis.

“We raise a little bit of money for the service through the sale of items here, and also women in the refuges who’ve left with nothing can come here and get items that have been donated,” she said.

“We’re a service to the local community as well, because we’re a very cheap op shop. This is where we process a lot of donations, some go to the refuges, some stay here depending on what the refuges need.”

“It’s hard, but a lot of women and children do leave with nothing, and we have a good stock of children’s clothes here. It’s so they have clean clothes they can change in to. It makes a huge difference.

“And I guess for children as well, you can imagine there’s a lot of disruption, leaving with nothing, they’ve left toys behind, favourite things.

“We usually make sure we’ve got a collection of toys at the refuges, often when children come there’s a little teddy on the bed or something like that.”

“We had support from Bunnings and also the City of Belmont to refurbish the shop,” Ms Barron said.

“The op shop was looking a bit tired, and everything’s looking fresh. There’s more space, and people can see what we’ve got.”

The Fresh Start op shop is open from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Friday and is at 9 Love Street, Cloverdale.
